The inspiration for this top was the inlaid spiny oyster shells made by the Santo Domingo Pueblo Indians. Shells were smoothed, turquoise mosaic was appliqued over the top three-quarters of the shell, a line of alternating black onyx and white shell pieces was then arranged across the bottom of the turquoise mosaic. The bottom of the shell was left natural so the red/coral color showed. The decorated shells were worn as necklace pendants (Margaret Wood, Navajo/Seminole, 2011). |
